Carpentry that holds up – and looks right

Good carpentry is mostly invisible: floors that don’t bounce, doors that close with a click, a roof that stays where it was put. The rest is the detail you notice every day.

We do both kinds. On site, that’s structural timberwork – roofs, floors and stud walls – and the first and second fix that follows. Then there’s joinery made to fit: built-in storage for awkward alcoves, shelving, window seats and the finishing pieces that make a room feel complete.

Recent jobs range from refurbishing a dormer with a new sliding sash window to re-boarding a stable, building oak and larch porches, and fitting a wall of made-to-measure shelving. Carpentry runs through everything else we build too, so it’s the same care whether it’s part of an extension or a job on its own.

What we take on

  • Roof, floor and wall structures
  • First and second fix carpentry
  • Doors, frames, skirting and architrave
  • Built-in storage and shelving
  • Made-to-measure joinery
  • Windows, porches and cladding

What we make

From the structure to the finish

Structural carpentry

Cut roofs, floor joists, stud walls and the timber frames inside extensions and conversions – built square, level and to the engineer’s spec.

First & second fix

Door linings, stairs and floors before the plaster; then doors, skirting, architrave and ironmongery after it, fitted tight and true.

Built-in storage

Alcove cupboards, shelving and under-stairs storage that make the most of the shape of the room instead of fighting it.

Bespoke joinery

Window seats, panelling and one-off pieces, made to measure for the space they’re going into.

Questions

Carpentry explained

What’s the difference between carpentry and joinery?

Carpentry is the work done on site – roofs, floors, walls, and fitting doors, frames and trim. Joinery is making the pieces themselves, such as made-to-measure cupboards, shelving or window seats. We do both, so a fitted piece can be made for the exact room it’s going into.

What do first fix and second fix mean?

First fix is everything done before the walls are plastered: structural timber, door linings, floors and the framing for stairs. Second fix comes after: hanging doors, fitting skirting and architrave, and the handles, hinges and locks. On an extension we do both.

Can you match existing woodwork in an older house?

Send us a photo of the skirting, architrave or door you want to match. Many older profiles are still made, and where they aren’t, there are usually good ways to get close – we’ll tell you what’s possible before any work starts.
